Help is on the Way

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. & Council Member James Vacca organized a relief effort for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The BP and the Councilman filled a school bus with supplies and volunteers to aid in the relief effort on Staten Island.

Sports is Secondary in Sandy Aftermath

BRONX, NEW YORK, November 5- There is no need to be concerned about the NFL this weekend, or a college football game. Or the Knicks, Nets, and baseball free agency for that matter. And if the New York City Marathon had stayed on schedule, that would have been a tragedy,

Nothing is more important now than getting back to normal in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, or whatever type of storm that it was which hit the Bronx and tri state area. Sports, as much as it heals the wounds is secondary.
Because over the last few days this writer has been a victim of a tragedy, as well as seeing neighbors and friends suffer the same path. There is no power, no heat or hot water to keep warm, no power to cook a warm meal, no way to utilize technology,
The television and computer are useless in places that have become a dark age for the moment.
It’s simple, sports is secondary, though to many of those 40,000 plus runners who came to New York for an annual marathon, a 26-mile race was more important to them than the safety and security of those affected by the storm.
This is not the aftermath of September 2001. Sports became a diversion and tried to calm the storm of destruction and pain. Major League Baseball resumed a week later, and the NFL canceled their games for a week.
And when sports resumed, it seemed we got back to normal. But, not this time. The look of pain is etched on their faces, of those feeling an impact in the Bronx. Getting back to normal and resuming their lives are the most important factors in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
Reading with a candle and flashlight, that defines an explanation in the early days of November 2012.
This writer had to relocate for the time being. Sports, is not a priority for the moment as much as it consumes a majority of the time. Away from family and friends right now is not the place to be. They are there to help and offer support as they have been affected as well.
We look for solutions as to how a huge metropolis and a vast area of the Bronx could be silenced in 2012. No use of technology for now, silenced from news and events of the storm, and relying on the old transistor radio to stay updated.
You see neighbors in need. A tenement silenced without power, heat, and gas to live and function, and a neighbor from her second floor window, screaming and pleading for help, early in the morning, on day two of the aftermath of Sandy.
This is 2012, and in a world of technology nothing could be done to prevent human tragedy from a killer storm that hit the Bronx and tri-state area.
And, through it all, the power companies have done their best restoring power to the millions who have been in the dark. But, as seen in the Bronx, not enough has been done. Crews and trucks are still assessing damages and determining what has to be done to restore power in many communities that are in need.
Yes, forget about sports for the moment. Restoring normalcy is the game plan right now.
However, the prevailing questions are, when will we get back to normal? When can we return to our homes? When will the power be restored? To a layman not familiarized with the topic of power and energy that can be a waiting game of no more.

Helping Hurricane Victims

BRONX, NEW YORK, November 1- Many millions of Americans living on the Atlantic coast had their lives disrupted, if not much worse, by the power of Hurricane Sandy during the past few days. Double figures of lives were lost, homes were demolished, large numbers of people were stranded in their homes, millions lost power, public transportation in the tri--state area could not run.

Those fortunate to have power have watched the mesmerizing story of the unwelcome visit on TV or look at the photos on this website or in this week’s Bronx News.
First responders who work in the metropolitan area, members of the National Guard and volunteers from other sections of the nation are working to better the lives of local residents and repair the damaged infrastructure.
Individuals and organizations make also being looking for ways to aid the relief effort. Those who do can follow the example of the New York Yankees. The Bronx sports franchise donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross, which is trying to assist the victims of the super storm.
The Yankees Managing Partner Hal Steinbrenner made a statement regarding the natural disaster, “The damage and destruction to the Tri-State area caused by Hurricane Sandy is daunting, but we have seen the great resiliency of this region before. As a neighbor and community member, the Yankees embrace our role of stepping forward and assisting the American Red Cross, which comes to the aid of so many people through their tireless efforts.”
This is not the first time the Yankees under the Steinbrenner ownership have become involved in charitable undertakings. The organization as a unit as well as individual players has formed foundations to aid a variety of causes. The organization today is setting an example that hopefully that hopefully will be followed by other sports organizations and businesses of all types.

Sandy Cleanup Continues

BRONX, NEW YORK, October 31- Hurricane Sandy left a great deal of damage for Bronxites to pick up. In Pelham Bay Park ancient, massive trees toppled over. On Bronx streets , such as in Morris Park and Riverdale, knocked over trees caused damage to homes and power lines.

Teens Robbing Teens

BRONX, NEW YORK, October 24- Police are looking for young thieves in incidents in Parkchester and within the confines of the 45th Precinct. In one incident teens mugged a group of youngsters.
At around 4:15 a.m. on September 1, a group of three males, ages 15 and 16, were approached by a pair of teen muggers. The two thieves demanded property and the teens forked it over.
Cops released surveillance video of the suspected muggers. The first suspect is described as a a black male between the ages of 16 and 18. He is 5 foot 8 and was last seen wearing a black shirt and sweat pants. The second suspect is described as a black male between the ages of 17 and 18. He is 5 foot 10 and was last seen wearing a green and white t-shirt and jeans.
In another case, a Parkchester man was robbed inside his own home. At around 4:19 a.m. on September 14, the thief entered a Parkchester resident’s Metropolitan Oval apartment. The thief displayed a handgun and removed the victim’s laptop and cell phone. 
The suspect is described as black male between the ages of 25 and 27. He is around 160 pounds and was seen wearing a black t-shirt, black hat and dark green pants. Police released a still from a surveillance video in the hopes that someone would recognize him.

Google Helps Bronx Small Biz Get Online

BRONX, NEW YORK, October 22- This week, Google brought its New York Get Your Business Online program to NYC with events throughout all five boroughs. Launched last year in Albany and Buffalo, New York Get Your Business Online helps drive economic growth by giving small businesses the tools and resources to establish a website, find new customers, and grow their business.
The event, held at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, is the final one in a week-long series that has reached all five boroughs and included almost a thousand of NYC’s small businesses. At each event, Google has worked with small business owners to create their own websites courtesy of Intuit. Businesses have also received a customized domain name, free web hosting for one year, a local business listing on Google Maps, free tools, training and resources. Google experts have been on hand to train the business owners on how to reach more customers online.
“We are committed to making sure the City’s small businesses are online so potential customers can find them,” said Susan Molinari, Vice President, Public Policy & Government Relations, for Google. “Many small businesses do not have a website because they think it is too expensive, too difficult or too time consuming to create. New York Get Your Business Online helps small businesses easily and quickly create their own web presence and start growing their businesses online.”
New York Get Your Business Online is an easy and fast way for Bronx small businesses to get a website and become more visible online, where the majority of people are going to find goods and services. While 97 percent of Americans look online for local products and services, 53% percent of New York’s small businesses do not have a website or online presence.
“As a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee I am deeply involved in matters involving the internet and I know that having a presence on the internet is an absolute necessity today,” said Congressman Eliot Engel. “More and more, commerce is becoming e-commerce. This is an opportunity to raise your presence beyond your neighborhood and spread the word much further afield about what you can do for your customers and to attract new ones.”
During this morning’s session, State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson stopped by to visit and speak with the business leaders who were participating.

Comic Con 2012 – Review

BRONX, NEW YORK, October 15- If you did not attend the sold out Comic Con 2012 here is just a little recap of what you missed. 
As soon as you got near the Javits Center you entered another dimension. A dimension of comic characters coming to life as many Comic Con 2012 attendees were dressed as their favorite comic characters for the daily costume contest. There were the usual Supermen & Supergirls, Batmen & Robins, Vampires & Zombies, many of the new comic characters, and even characters that were made up that people might want to see. When I asked some people why they came in their outfits, the answer was “This is the only time other than Halloween that I can dress up like this”.
While there were dozens and dozens of booths selling comics going back to first issues of almost any and every comic book printed, and artists signing and posing for pictures. Comic Con 2012 was more than just comics. There were “Spotlight Comic Guests”, “Featured Comic Guests” “Spotlight Entertainment Guests”, (such as Adam West T.V.'s 
original Batman, Julianne Moore of Carrie, Kevin Bacon of the Following, Vanessa Williams of 666 Park Avenue, Christopher Lloyd of Back to the Future fame, Lou Ferrigno of the Hulk fame, WWE star Booker T, and Divas Kelly Kelly and the Bella Twins Brie and Nikki, and former boxer/wrestler Butterbean to name only a few. Each day was a different line up of stars and characters.
I went Friday and went back on Sunday to the Javits center for “Kids Day”. Sunday was the most crowded as line waits were about one half an hour or more at several “hot” booths. On Sunday three stars of wrestling Tito Santana, Brutis “The Barber” Beefcake, and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, were taking photos with the attendees. Greg Valentine appeared in April at St. Francis Xavier “Wrestling Night” event in the Morris Park area of the Bronx. Also with a Bronx connection was Gregory Lamberson author of the “FRENZY WAR”, who with his Bronx partner Marc Makowski made the “SLIME CITY” cult film series of movies.
